View Full Version : stator wire fixing
I'm doing a high wind motor and need to fix the wire on each arm as I need to go from the outside of the arm to the inside at each end of a wind.
I was thinking of using some epoxy, but that would mean wasting a lot of epoxy. It's almost impossible to mix such small amounts. :?
I saw some red "glue" used on a stator I salvaged from a hard drive. Can anybody tell me what this is? It was elastic, which is needed to protect the laquer of the wire.

Sounds like a urethane or silicon based potting compound.
It didn't look like some putty but really like a red transparent glue.

Bert, what you are describing sounds similar to the red insulating varnish on this page http://www.action-electronics.com/gcelect.htm. I've used it on my winds and am happy with it but it does take a while to dry. I've been using CA for tacking things down as you describe. I know some people have said it strips the varnish off but I have not had that problem so far.
You'll notice on the same page above there are a number of other products to use on coils and transformers that might be useful. I noticed that there is this vendor doesn't seem to export but I assume you can find the same thing in your area.
"RED Insulating Varnish for protection from humidity, insulation and against the weather
Alkyd-based compound, especially resistant to environmental extremes including oils, water and most acids and alkalis. Retains its high dielectric strength even if wet and is, therefore, especially adaptable to the insulation of electrical and electronic devices or components which may be operated in a very humid climate and up to 250°F (121°C). For general insulation of coils, transformers, motor windings and for all-around protection against oxidation and atmospheric attacks. [Restrictions-No Export] [MSDS]
Good for Lots of Projects using Transformers
2 fl. oz. [59 ml.] Bottle with Brush."
