I just pulled apart a cd-rom and found a nice little 18mm stator motor. the can is vented and the shaft is 2mm? same size as a speed 280. anybody used one of these motors? are there magnets that will fit this can?
Stator:
OD: 18mm
Thickness: 7.25mm
Insulation: none
Can:
ID: 21.16mm
I have found similar motors in CDrom drives and found it pretty hard to get the stator off. The way that worked best for me is to break the bottom plate as close to the center as possible. It's made from zamak, a zink and alu alloy, and breaks pretty easily. Then you can put the stator on a vise and tap the center through using a nail.
Zamak is pretty heavy and not very strong, so it's better to replace it with an alu plate anyways.
A friend of mine is using 15 turns of 26 guage wire using a 7x4 prop. The prop is a bit too big as the motor is running a bit hot, but it's all he had at the time. The plane weighs 130gr.

so am I correct in understanding he used none of the original mount? he removed the stator and used a tube or something? I was hoping to spin a 7 in prop. but I thought it might be pusing it.

also, what did he use for magnets?
I'll ask him and get back to you

What brand/mod was the donor?
I got mine out of an IPC peripherals 36X CDrom drive. These motors are totally encased. You don't see the bell! Only the flat cable that comes out of it is a give away it's a brushless.
The magnets used are 10x5x1
He uses 10 of them and uses an AaABbBCcC configuration. Upper case is clockwise and lower case is a counter clockwise winding. My friend made a special mount for it. His hobby is metal working, so he has all the equipment to do this.
Check out this link (http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=334116&page=&fpart=all&vc=1) on how to make one yourself without a lathe or mill.

looks like a good plan. I was able to make the mount with small brass tubing and some bushings I had. pretty light due to it's simplicity. looks like it might be a winner. do you know if it's a delta or a wye?

not too sure on the brand. think it was out of a compaq and was a Sanyo? took apart too many to remember. haven't seen one like it before.

it works! Thanks for the help Q! I used 10 10x5x1 n50's and 17 turns of 26g wire AaABbBCcC. runs like a champ. if I did it again I'd use 8x4x1's which I can't find so I guess I would double up on 4x4x1's. there isn't much room for error in there. don't have any test data yet but if I do get some I'll post it.
You are very welcome.
A picture of the final build would be appreciated by many I'm sure. :D
I'm a bit short on time due to a new job, but once my GBx kit is done I'm going to follow your lead.

no good pic yet but I did finally make a nice setup for testing current. I'm to poor to buy a nice watt meter. starting a thrust test setup tonight or tomorrow. I'm only drawing 2A WOT with a graupner folding 4.7x2.4. I was expecting more. I'll have to check thrust and rethink my winds. If I can get away with 2A I should have a nice flight time :)
