I, as a newbie here, have some rather simplistic questions for you all. I have a couple of CD-rom motors out of drives that no longer work.(laser problems) Can these motors be wired up for use in models? OR are there extensive mods that have to be done to make these work? I saved the ribbons, so that the wires can be soldered to make the three needed for the speed controller, but are there other mods neccesary? I noticed that the kits use individual magnets for the rotor(can). These have a magnet "ring". I want to build some of thee GB kits, I just want to mess around with these first if they can work without a lot of mods. ----Bob

TopCub,

Yes, they should work. Not ALL cdrom motors are suitable for conversion, but many can be. Take 'em apart to see what components they consist of, and let us know. Pictures will help too. Make sure you're careful not to damage any pieces during the "deconstruction";).

The mods are not extensive, and in fact are only as "extensive" as you choose to make them. A converted motor WILL run using the stock magnet ring, but it's not nearly as strong as the NdFeB magnets most people use. The result is more torque and higher efficiency.

I see. My understanding is that the wires in the ribbon from the stock motor need to be soldered together using the ABCABCABC method? (all "A's" together, and so on) then these are hooked to a speed control made for brushless motors, such as a castle creations Phoenix 10? ------------Bob
